Venture vs VentureOne (and vs a free 2% card)

The Venture and its no-fee sibling, the VentureOne, are the same card with one trade: the Venture charges $95/yrfor 2x miles instead of 1.25x. Here's where they differ. The calculator above uses the 2x and 1.25x earn rates (miles at 1¢) to work out your number, and it compares against any card you pick, not just the VentureOne.

Common questions

Is the Capital One Venture worth the $95 fee?

It depends on the card you already carry and how much you spend. The Venture earns 2x miles (worth about 2% at 1¢/mile) on everything, versus 1.25x on the no-fee VentureOne. That extra 0.75% covers the $95 fee at roughly $12,700/yr in spending, above that the Venture wins, below it the free VentureOne does. Against a flat 2% cashback card the rate is a tie, so the free card wins on the fee unless you value the Venture's Global Entry credit, no foreign transaction fees, and transfer partners. The calculator above gives you the exact number vs whatever card you carry now.

Capital One Venture vs VentureOne: which is better?

Same family, one trade: the Venture charges $95/yr for 2x miles; the VentureOne is free but earns 1.25x. Once your total spend clears about $12,700/yr, the Venture's extra 0.75% (worth ~$95 at that spend) starts beating the fee, and it adds a Global Entry credit and a larger welcome bonus. Spend less than that and the free VentureOne keeps more in your pocket.

How much are Capital One miles worth?

One cent each when you redeem them to erase a travel purchase (any airline, hotel, rideshare, etc.), with no hoops, which is the value this calculator uses. Transferring to airline and hotel partners can be worth more but takes effort, so we don't count that upside. Cashing miles out for a statement credit is worth only about half a cent, which makes the Venture look meaningfully worse, so it's only for people who'll actually redeem for travel.

Does the Venture beat a flat 2% cashback card?

On pure earn rate, no: 2x miles is about 2%, the same as free cards like the Wells Fargo Active Cash or Citi Double Cash, which charge no fee. The Venture's case is everything around the rate: transfer partners (upside we don't count), a Global Entry/TSA credit worth up to $120, no foreign transaction fees, and a large welcome bonus. If you'll use those, it can be worth it; if you just want simple cashback, a free 2% card wins. Pick a 2% card as your current card above to see the gap.

Not sure the Venture is your best option?

The Venture is a solid flat-rate travel card, but a different card might beat it for how you actually spend. Rank every card against your real numbers, free.
